8 Steps for Baseboard Caulking Bottom of

As a beginner, you must follow these eight crucial steps if you want professional baseboard sealing.
1. Pick the Right Caulk

Picking the right caulk can give your living space a professional look and offer protection from water damage and extensive wear and tear. There are two major types of caulks.

i. Latex/acrylic caulk
ii. Silicon caulk

Latex/acrylic caulk is an ideal choice for you here. It is paintable and easily matches the baseboard’s color.

However, silicon-based caulk can’t be painted and is best used in bathrooms, kitchens, tubs, sinks, etc.

2. Tips for Using the Caulking Gun

i. The first tip is the holy grail of caulking. All you need is to cut a small tip at an angle of 45 degrees of the caulking cartridge. Don’t cut it too small otherwise, it will squeeze out the back.

ii. For smooth and perfect gliding, swipe the caulking cartridge back like two to four times on the sanding paper to get a groove at the tip.

iii. Draw an orientation line right parallel to the longest point of the tip. This will help you move the cartridge along the surface accurately.

iv. Pick the dripless caulking gun over the regular levered one to streamline the caulking process without trapping into a hit-or-miss situation.

v. If you’re using the caulking gun for the first time, it’s better to practice it with a newspaper. Slightly pull the trigger with constant pressure, hold the gun steeper to the surface and let the caulk get out of the nozzle. Create a long straight line without any gaps and thick spots. Try it for real when you are confident.

3. Clean the Area

Once you have done the above two steps, take a clean wet rag and remove all dirt debris on the baseboard and surrounding area. Over and above, keep the working area free of all obstacles like furniture, pets, children, etc.

4. Lay Down the Masking Tape
Now, cover the work area around the caulking with masking tape to keep the caulking process uniform and provide protection against spills.

5. Caulk Between Baseboard and Floor
Now, you are ready for baseboard caulking  to the floor. Hold the gun steeper to the surface, squeeze the trigger with constant pressure and move along the length of the baseboard. Remember to move at a slow and even pace to get a fine and neat caulking line. You can repeat it for a more durable filling.

6. Smooth the Caulk Under Baseboards
To ensure the caulk sits perfectly in the gap:
i. Drag your finger gently along the caulking line.
ii. Wipe off your finger with a damp rag when it gets a substantial amount of caulking.
iii. Don’t apply too much pressure; otherwise, the caulk will be scrapped off entirely.
You can also follow the same process for caulking between the baseboard and wall.

7. Dry and Remove the Masking Tape
When the baseboard caulking starts to dry, remove the masking tape gently and slowly and manage the spills with a slightly wet rag. Don’t wait for the caulk to dry completely; otherwise, you will end up pulling the caulk with tape.

Now, you are all set.

8. Paint the baseboard
Once the caulk is completely dried, you can paint it with the baseboard’s matching colour for an incredible first-class baseboard caulking bottom finish.
